CERAMICS IN LATIN AMERICA
In this project, fourth grade students examined the practical uses for ceramics in the Latin American world, including the combination of form and function in wares such as bowls or plates. Through our studies of Latin American ceramics, the students learned of the function and use of ceramic products across world cultures and times. Students examined and discussed examples provided by authentic Latin American artists and talked about the use of symbols such as the sun, moon, and plant and animal life indigenous to Latin American countries. By creating their own plates through hand-building ceramics techniques and adorning them with their own compositions, the students spoke about their own time and place in the world, using pictures and symbols to explain something about their life, identity, or personality.
